Taking Friendship Offline

One of the hardest things about modern life is how isolating it can be. Everyone's busier than ever, more online than ever, and using technologies that prioritise convenience over community. Tech companies will tell you If something isn't on demand, fast, and easy it's worthless.

We wanted to buck that to trend. To take friendship out of the group chat and bring people together IRL. To make something mind bending, playful, human, and fun.

Folklore became the antidote to a doomscrolling world:

  • In person, face-to-face experiences

  • Spending quality time with your people

  • Making complexity a feature, not a bug

Mind Bending Murder Mysteries

Folklore's games are built on characters with abilities that can produce an almost infinite number of results.

Our storyteller recaps are designed to feel like the final monologue of a genius inspector at the end of a murder mystery movie. The kind where you hear what happened and go:

"Of course... No way... I should've known!"

The clues were always there and everything has a cause and effect. Things happen by chance for sure, but there are no meaningless red herring's manufactured just to mess with you. We leave that to the evil team.

Designed to forge bonds

When we say there's no better way to bond than accusing people of murder, you probably think we're joking... but it's truer than you think.

The magic of folklore is the way it invites people to play with each others' status. Players tease each other the way best friends do and that opens the door to a chance for real bonding.

Unlike escape rooms where players' attention is on an inanimate object, in folklore, the puzzle is the people. That means you and your friends, colleagues, or strangers are in flow, socialising, paying attention to each other, and accusing each other of murder every time you play.

Proudly Made in Perth by Mike

Folklore's founder, lead storyteller, and chief mystery officer is Mike Drysdale. A Perth creative and WAAPA acting Alumni whose love of games and people is core to everything we do.

For years Mike observed that the most reliable way to get his friends in a room without the temptation to check their phones was by playing social deduction games.

It was Mike's partner back in 2024 who told him "he loved these games so much, he should just make his own". That one comment gave him the audacity to believe it was possible and the rest, as they say... is folklore.
