Less than six months into our existence Folklore is making quite a splash! With the five star Google reviews piling up, bookings increasing, and more amateur sleuths than ever, we're starting to see a pattern in why people love what we do. That's why we've done the hard work for you and have written this handy guide as to why Perth loves folklore Murder Mystery Events.

Giving good people 😇 an excuse to be bad 😈
“I can’t wait to play again… I think the evil life might be for me” - Lexi Rollins
Let's face it, being bad can be fun. Or as one of our incredible monster's put it: “I loved the excuse to manipulate my friends in the name of entertainment”. The chance to play an evil character, test your poker face, step outside of your comfort zone, and act out of character is an adrenalin inducing thrill ride.
The most engaging interactive social experience
"Folklore's ability to engage a group of people and create a night of high-stress, humour, and all round fun times is spectacular." - Sasha Burdakova
Our games keep people on edge! And it's hard to reach for your phone when you're constantly watching your back. From the moment our games get underway players lean in. Almost like they have no other choice. The degree of complex problem solving requires just the right amount of brain power to put almost anyone into that dopamine inducing flow state.
High stakes, story-worthy, memorable moments
"We were still talking about highlights from the game in the weeks after" - Sarai Mannolini-Winwood
Life and death moments are fortunately quite rare in most peoples' day-to-day lives. Part of what makes Folklore games special is their ability to generate so much investment in these fictional scenarios. That elevates our players' emotions of joy, fear, surprise, and betrayal to new heights. As they come back to reality the realisation that "it was all just a game" is mind blowing and the joy comes from reliving those moments that felt so real.
Satisfyingly strategic, while being easy to learn
"The storyteller was happy to help those with any questions. The game itself is easy to follow and no game is the same." - Demelza Leonard
In designing our games, we take pride in walking the line between complexity and accessibility. A Folklore murder mystery game should be explained in five minutes, learnt over the course of a night, and enjoyably mastered through countless play-throughs. With over twenty unique roles and abilities and a system that keeps people involved after they die, it really is engaging from start to finish. There are countless ways to play each role and every player brings their own flavour and strategy to every randomised play through.
A chance to bring your friends out of their shell
“I'm very quiet in new groups, but by the end of the game was happily plotting with complete strangers.” - Ellie Christina
There's no one way to be a good Folklore Murder Mystery player. In fact, the contrasting styles of leading, interrogating, information gathering, chaos generating, politicking, and puzzle solving make the game what it is. However, the desire for information and the ability to have private conversations is the perfect ice breaker for less familiar or quieter players. Folklore games are designed for inclusion and communication from the jump.
Deepens friendships and creates genuine bonds
"I can't wait to introduce this experience to more of my friends and couldn't recommend it enough to those who haven't tried it!" - Matt Upston
There's something about throwing wild accusations, lying through your teeth, and realising you've ganged up on an innocent bystander that really brings people together. Chances are, someone will be suspected for being too quiet. But don't worry, they'll also be suspected for being too loud, too curious and not curious enough. It's all a little ludicrous, and that's the point! It's raucous, uninhibited, and impolite in the best possible way.
It gets better every time you play
"Great that we got to play 2 games, as everyone got way more invested and calculated as they understood the game more." - Linda Pearson
Once everyone has their bearings, Folklore takes on a whole new shape and style. Players start to realise the ways they can exploit their abilities, which roles might be easier to bluff as, and how to catch other players in a lie. As players start to realise every moment is an opportunity to gather information or sew a little chaos, more and more strategies enter the game. It's not just fun to play, it's fun to watch!
Our storytellers know their stuff
"Mike is an amazing story teller, who gets right into his role, the atmosphere was amazing and everyone really got into it."
Storytelling is in our blood. Our Chief Mystery Officer Mike is a former WAAPA trained actor, and all Folklore storytellers come from creative backgrounds. We leave no stone unturned in considering how we can elevate your experience, add to the ambience and set the tone for an incredible night.
The perfect low stress party entertainment
"Well planned, well executed, and a whole lot of fun." Alex Hamilton
Sort of like this snippet of Alex's review, setting up a Folklore night is simple. You can book online, we come to you, and all you need is space for everyone to sit in a circle with nothing in the middle. Your storyteller takes care of the rest. It's that easy.
A safe way to have an existential crisis
“Utterly destroyed my faith in humanity. 10/10, will play again!” Gabe Mach
Who doesn't love a little manufactured existential dread? Our lives so often oscillate between hope and despair in a not so fun way. But when we do it in art and games it becomes inspired, hilarious, and a somewhat dark mirror to the world around us. If you love meta modernist pop culture like Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, Palm Springs, or Hamilton, you'll love Folklore.
